According to
South Coast Today:While Mitt Romney condemns polygamy and its prior practice by his Mormon church, the Republican presidential candidate's great-grandfather had five wives and at least one of his great-great grandfathers had 12.
Polygamy was not just a historical footnote, but a prominent element in the family tree of the former Massachusetts governor now seeking to become the first Mormon president.
Romney's great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, married his fifth wife in 1897. That was more than six years after Mormon leaders banned polygamy and more than three decades after a federal law barred the practice.
Robert Klien sums this up best:
When I saw this outrageous story, my first thought was that it read like an Onion parody of how absurdly overboard the media goes in digging up dirt on presidential candidates. It's hard to know whether to chalk this up to liberal bias or religious bigotry that for some reason is tolerated when Mormons are involved.
I have to say that I agree with Klien. I don't really care nor do I think this is a rational reason not to vote for someone, but this shit is pretty funny.

Don't want Romney to win, either, but that story's kind of not fair. Most Utahns who have ancestors there early enough are descended from polygamists. It would have been strange if he wasn't.
A wonderful catholic priest I know, who was a convert, is connected by his ancestry to one of the former LDS presidents...as well as being connected to a queen in medieval Germany who was proclaimed a Catholic saint.
There are many reasons I don't want Romney, especially for his stance on gay marriage and his mixed stance on right to life, but I won't use his ancestry against him.
I totally agree with you. The press will grab on anything to trash this guy at this point. This was mentioned here for 100% humor sake. It is totally unfair to bring this into a political conversation, and this site is trying very hard not to be legitimate. His record and shoddy credibility are exactly what we should be paying attention to, not crap like this.
We tackle this issue and show why we thing it is fair at Mormonsagainstromney.org
Hopefully people will also consider our discussion of Romney's anti-France stance also.
I'm from Illinois, where they massacred Mormons in the early 1800's.
We all have are own skeletons in our ancestral closet.
